The Pulse Drive is an evolution of the Jet Drive. Instead of igniting a stream of gas, it uses a series of nuclear explosions (pulses) to generate considerable thrust. This allows for larger and faster units than were possible with the mere Jet Drive.
Researching Pulse Drive will unlock new units. Each unit that uses a Pulse Drive will also get a 20% speed boost with each level researched.
