The Research Lab is where you build new Technologies. Generally technologies can do one of the following things.
1. Improve existing items. For instance, upgrading Weapons Tech gives all of your ships 20% extra Weapons Power in battle. 2. Unlock new Technologies. 3. Unlock new Ships, Buildings, and Defenses.
