Bashing is the term for a single player attacking the same planet more than 6 times in a 24 hour period. It is against the rules of the game unless the alliances each player belongs to are at war.
The game automatically prevents players from launching bashing attacks. Once attacking a player more than six times in a 24-hour period (unless, as stated, your alliances are in a formally declared war), the game will not allow you to launch another strike until the 24-hour window has passed.
Espionage missions which are intercepted, resulting in all probes being destroyed, do not count toward the bashing limit (even though the probe owner's Home screen does refer to this as an attack).
