All planets have an finite amount of building that can be done on them. For the homeworld, this is 163 fields. Every building on the planet takes up 1 field.

When you colonize a new planet, it is formed with a random amount of fields. Depending on which spot in the Solar System that you colonize, there is a higher chance of getting a bigger planet (spots 4-6 are the best). Generally a planet with 200 fields or more is considered an elite one.
