Anti-ballistic missiles (ABMs) are designed to stop incoming Interplanetary Missiles (IPMs). In the event of an IPM attack on any world, ABMs automatically deploy. Each ABM destroys one IPM, preventing it from doing damage to the attacked planet's defenses.

ABMs are built in the shipyard and stored in the Missile Silo. Because an ABM is considerably cheaper than an IPM, and because they take up half the space in the Missile Silo, they are extremely effective against IPMs. Someone using IPMs to attack a planet that has the maximum capacity of ABMs need to have a missile silo level equal to at least twice the defender's plus one to get any through. So if the defender has a Level 4 Missile silo full of ABMs (40 of them), the attacker would need a level 9 Silo (because a Level 8 could hold only 40 IPMs, which would all be destroyed by ABMS) to get even one through. That is extremely expensive, making the ABM very effective.
