The Crew Droid gives you the crew points you need to run missions if you're unable to invite any friends to the game through the crew page. Each Crew Droid gives you 1 Crew Point.
Crew Droids do not do anything else besides provide a Crew Point. They cannot be used in factories, and they do not need to be assigned to anywhere to provide the crew point.
Production
The Crew Droid is produced at the Factory.
