What good is the espionage equation? An example from my direct experience. The defender has only a listed 3% chance of detecting the probes, but he destroys the probes 5 times out of 6? (An 84% kill ratio, costing me 20,000 crystal worth of probes). Your equation is screwed up, or is not running properly. - Scott Dec 25th 2009

I believe, regarding this thread/comment by debacle, what may be wrong is that there is no second example given where your tech is lower than opponents:
 +
 +
'''Example 2: You have espionage level 2. The opponent you are scanning has espionage level 4, and you include 2 probes in the scanning fleet.''' '''Therefore we use the formula: 2 - (4-2)2 = -2 You will see the enemy's resources only, as your tech number is less than 1'''

according to your calc.
 +
 +
If your Espionage Tech level is greater than or equal to your opponents:
 +
Espionage Number = number of probes in the scanning fleet + (your Espionage Tech level - opponent's Espionage Tech level)2.
 +
 +
If your opponent's Espionage Tech level is greater than yours:
 +
Espionage Number = number of probes in the scanning fleet - (opponents' Espionage Tech level - your Espionage Tech level)2.
 +
 +
 +
so if my Espionage Tech level is 6 and my opponents is 2 and I send 1 probe then my Espionage Number = 17
 +
 +
but if My Tech level is 2 and my opponents is 6 and I send 1 probe then my Espionage Number = 15
 +
 +
the only diference in the calc is that if your Espionage Tech level is greater than or equal to your opponents then you add the number of probes sent, and if your opponents Espionage Tech level is greater than yours you subtract the number of probes sent.
 +
 +
 +
 +
'''I think I figured out the math mistake in the Tech level'''
 +
 +
Remember when you square a negitive number, it gives you a positive number. Using the above example:
 +
 +
if my Espionage Tech level is 6 and my opponents is 2 and I send 1 probe: 1 + (6-2)2 = one plus 4 squared or 1+16 or esp# of 17
 +
 +
but if My Tech level is 2 and my opponents is 6 and I send 1 probe:  1 - (2-6)2 = one minus negative 4 squared or 1-16 or ESP# negative 15.
 +
 +
Meaning in the second example you'll need 16 more probes just to see resources.
 +
 +
But if tech levels only have a difference of 1 or 2, it shouldn't take too many probes to get the info you're looking for.

'''If your Espionage Tech level is greater than or equal to your opponent's:'''
 +
 +
'''Espionage Number = number of probes in the scanning fleet + (your Espionage Tech level - opponent's Espionage Tech level)2.'''
 +
 +
that says 1+(6-2)2 = 17
 +
 +
'''If your opponent's Espionage Tech level is greater than yours:'''
 +
 +
'''Espionage Number = number of probes in the scanning fleet - (opponent's Espionage Tech level - your Espionage Tech level)2. '''
 +
 +
That says 1-(6-2)2 (the change was putting opponent first in the (6-2) part so the higher number is always first for a positive number) in this case 1-(6-2)2 = -15
 +
 +
Though you were still correct in that it was a -15 and you need more probes - but not to just see res as you will always get that - it's to see more than res (and it would take 25 more probes to get esp #2 and 36 more probes to get esp #3)

== Espionage Warning ==

OK we get an attack warning on the fleet screen and a Triangular attack warning over the planet. You see the Espionage warning on the fleet screen but no warning over the planet. To my way of thinking it's only logical that a yellow warning triangle should pop up on the planet that is about to be probed. Having this would allow players to react to the probe and put they're ships and resources if any in the air if they wished to.

Counterespionage equation question

The espionage tech equation says "The number of defending ships in orbit around the planet. The higher the number, the more likely the counterespionage." Do Hermes and Helios class ships count in the "number of defending ships"?

Cannot Espionage or Attack

Espionage calc does not make any sense

according to your calc.

If your Espionage Tech level is greater than or equal to your opponents: Espionage Number = number of probes in the scanning fleet + (your Espionage Tech level - opponent's Espionage Tech level)2.

If your opponent's Espionage Tech level is greater than yours: Espionage Number = number of probes in the scanning fleet - (opponents' Espionage Tech level - your Espionage Tech level)2.

so if my Espionage Tech level is 6 and my opponents is 2 and I send 1 probe then my Espionage Number = 17

but if My Tech level is 2 and my opponents is 6 and I send 1 probe then my Espionage Number = 15

the only diference in the calc is that if your Espionage Tech level is greater than or equal to your opponents then you add the number of probes sent, and if your opponents Espionage Tech level is greater than yours you subtract the number of probes sent.

I think I figured out the math mistake in the Tech level

Remember when you square a negitive number, it gives you a positive number. Using the above example:

if my Espionage Tech level is 6 and my opponents is 2 and I send 1 probe: 1 + (6-2)2 = one plus 4 squared or 1+16 or esp# of 17

but if My Tech level is 2 and my opponents is 6 and I send 1 probe: 1 - (2-6)2 = one minus negative 4 squared or 1-16 or ESP# negative 15.

Meaning in the second example you'll need 16 more probes just to see resources.

But if tech levels only have a difference of 1 or 2, it shouldn't take too many probes to get the info you're looking for.

Regarding the error - it was in your reading of the equations

If your Espionage Tech level is greater than or equal to your opponent's:

Espionage Number = number of probes in the scanning fleet + (your Espionage Tech level - opponent's Espionage Tech level)2.

that says 1+(6-2)2 = 17

If your opponent's Espionage Tech level is greater than yours:

Espionage Number = number of probes in the scanning fleet - (opponent's Espionage Tech level - your Espionage Tech level)2.

That says 1-(6-2)2 (the change was putting opponent first in the (6-2) part so the higher number is always first for a positive number) in this case 1-(6-2)2 = -15

Though you were still correct in that it was a -15 and you need more probes - but not to just see res as you will always get that - it's to see more than res (and it would take 25 more probes to get esp #2 and 36 more probes to get esp #3)

You will receive the following information based on the scan's Espionage Number:

Number Information
0-1 The resources on the enemy planet.
2 The fleet(s) on the enemy planet.
3-4 The defense on the enemy planet.
5-6 The buildings on the enemy planet.
7+ The enemy's technologies and levels.

That table should say:

Number Information
<=1 The resources on the enemy planet.
2 The fleet(s) on the enemy planet.
3-4 The defense on the enemy planet.
5-6 The buildings on the enemy planet.
7+ The enemy's technologies and levels.

How do you actually do Espionage?

Thanks Hans 07:42, 11 March 2011 (UTC)

You can only probe a planet the is occupied. As for the Debris it is simple you see two numbers
45,000
93,300
here is the break down
Ore: 45,000
Crystal: 93,300

Each Dionysus Recycler carries 20,000 resources so for that debris totals 138,300 / 20,000 = 6.915 so 7 Dionysus
